Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Detachment Atsugi is located aboard U.S. Naval Air Facility Atsugi Japan. The primary mission is to provide intermediate level support to the fleet operating in the Western Pacific.
Earliest known fleet support services provided from Atsugi is Fleet Aircraft Service Squadron 11 who began operations in November 1950. In August 1951, major construction projects neared completion including the new parachute tower used in support of aviation units operating in Atsugi. AIMD became a department when Atsugi became a Naval Air Facility in 1971. When USS Midway was home ported at Yokosuka Naval Base in September 1973, AIMD provided services to the embarked Air Wing aircraft when the ship was in port. Most of the production work centers of AIMD were located in various locations aboard NAF Atsugi. In 1986, AIMD Atsugi started providing support for HC-5 home ported in Guam. In July 1988, building 194 was formally accepted by the U.S. Navy and became the primary location for AIMD, consolidating most of the production work centers and administration offices.
HSL-51 was established at Atsugi in October 1991 and AIMD Atsugi established repair capability for the SH-60F that same year. AIMD Atsugi became a primary fleet support activity in the Western Pacific in 1991 when Subic Bay and Cubi Point in the Philippines closed. AIMD Atsugi now provides intermediate level support for the Naval Air Forces operating in the Western Pacific, Indian Ocean, and Arabian Gulf.
In October 2001, AIMD detached from NAF Atsugi and became known as Commander Fleet Air Western Pacific, Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Detachment, Atsugi, Japan. The first Officer-in-Charge was CDR Kenneth W. Venable.
Current Officer in Charge is CDR Petronilo “Neil” S. Gomez.
