About
Commander Fleet Activities, Yokosuka comprises 568 acres and is located 43 miles south of Tokyo at the entrance of Tokyo Bay and approximately 18 miles south of Yokohama. Yokosuka is on the Miura peninsula in the Kanto Plain region of the Pacific Coast in Central Honshu, Japan. CFAY is the largest overseas U.S. Naval installation in the world and is considered to be one of the most strategically important bases in the U.S. military.
Yokosuka boasts some of the largest and best of everything the Navy has to offer. Over 50 forward-deployed tenant commands in Yokosuka support WESTPAC operating forces, including principle afloat elements of the United States Seventh Fleet and Commander Destroyer Squadron 15, including the only permanently forward-deployed aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76).
The challenge of providing extended service to the fleet overseas is met in a high operating tempo thanks to an exceptional Japanese-U.S. workforce. Yokosuka’s strategic location and support capabilities allow operating forces to be 17 days closer to locations in Asia than their counterparts based in the continental United States. It would take several times the number of rotationally-based ships in the United States to equal the same presence and crisis-response capability as the forward-deployed ships in Japan. Yokosuka’s reputation for exceptional service to the fleet is absolutely vital to mission accomplishment for naval units from Hawaii to the Persian Gulf.
Commander Fleet Activities, Yokosuka's Quality of Life programs include the biggest Navy hospital in mainland Japan, U.S. Naval Hospital, Yokosuka; the largest Morale, Welfare and Recreation Program within the Department of Defense; the largest revenue-producing overseas Navy Exchange complex; the largest Command Religious Program in the Navy; a local branch of the Navy Federal Credit Union; Navy College; Community Bank, DODEA schools, and the list goes on. The approximately 24,000 military and civilian personnel who live and work onboard Yokosuka naval base enjoy Quality of Life programs second to none.
Military personnel moving to Yokosuka should check out the CNFJ Housing home page. It contains information on PCS moves and base housing, as well as links to other web sites on base. If you are a civilian looking for a job in Yokosuka, please visit the Human Resources Office page.
