Captain Les Sobol was born in Jersey City, New Jersey and graduated from Naval Post Graduate School with a master’s degree in computer science and a master’s degree in Public Administration.
Sobol enlisted in the Navy in 1988 and served ten years as a Sonar Technician. He earned his commission through the Officer Candidate School program.
He is currently serving as Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka.
Sobol’s other sea duty assignments include Fleet Operations Officer and Director- Task Force Integrated Air and Missile Defense (AU) for SEVENTH Fleet simultaneously, Chief Staff Officer for Amphibious Squadron ELEVEN, Commanding Officer of USS GONZALEZ (DDG 66), Chief Engineer in USS PORTER (DDG 78), Materiel & Logistics Officer for Commander, Destroyer Squadron TWO, and as Fire Control Officer in USS PREBLE (DDG 88).
Throughout his career he has completed multiple deployments and supported numerous operations and exercises including OPERATION RESTORE HOPE, SOUTHERN WATCH, NOBLE EAGLE, RESILIENT SHIELD, ENDURING FREEDOM, IRAQI FREEDOM, and INHERENT RESOLVE.
Ashore, he served as the Flag Aide to the Commander, U.S. 2nd Fleet. He also served as the Officer in Charge for the Basic Division Officer Course and as a Project Officer for the Material Standards Assessment Group for the Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet.
